Blue Hen field hockey team raises record to 10-2

11:40 a.m., Oct. 6, 2003--The No. 12-ranked University of Delaware field hockey team won two Colonial Athletic Association games this weekend, raising its record to 10-2 overall and 2-0 in conference.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens defeated Virginia Commonwealth University 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Rullo Stadium. That followed a 2-1 victory over James Madison University on Friday night, also at Rullo.

Delaware will return to CAA action Friday night, Oct. 10, when it travels to Williamsburg, Va., to take on the College of William & Mary. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

In Sunday’s victory, UD freshman Katie Evans scored an unassisted goal at 56:43, and fellow freshman Megan Allen made four saves.

Evans took the ball up the right side of the field and cut into the crease uncontested, firing a shot between the left post and VCU goalkeeper Abby Stiles' left leg. The goal was Evans fifth of the season.

Virginia Commonwealth (5-6 overall, 1-1 in CAA) controlled most of the first half but Allen kept the Hens in the game, making a save on CAA goal leader Jen Howard at 12:42 on a shot off a penalty corner and on Karlijn Jansen's shot from the top of the circle at 18:30.

The Blue Hens dominated the second half, holding the Rams without a shot while building a 5-0 advantage in penalty corners. The UD backliners (senior Megan Henry, juniors Leah Geib and Jessi Balmer, and freshmen Kaili Kao and Amanda Warrington) shut down the VCU offense. For the game, Delaware outshot Virginia Commonwealth 11-5 and owned a 6-0 advantage in penalty corners.

Against James Madison, UD’s Jessica Breault scored the game-winning goal at 25:00, and Allen stopped Amy Cordes on a penalty stroke with 30 seconds left to secure the victory.

Junior Lauren Carr opened the scoring to give Delaware a 1-0 lead, with junior Jessi Balmer picking up her second assist of the season on the goal. Breault followed to increase the lead to 2-0.

James Madison’s Cordes cut the deficit to 2-1 when she scored at 46:30 off a penalty corner.

Later, a Cordes penalty stroke appeared to be heading into the right corner when Allen sprawled out and stopped the shot with her stick to preserve the Delaware lead.

Delaware controlled much of the first half, outshooting the Dukes 8-1 before James Madison regrouped and took control of the game in the second half.

James Madison (3-9 overall, 0-2 in CAA) outshot the Blue Hens 6-4 after the intermission but Allen came up with four big saves to keep the Blue Hens ahead. She finished with five for the game.
