UD field hockey team tops No. 12 Northeastern

Junior Jessi Balmer scored twice.
10:07 a.m., Sept. 22, 2003--Junior Jessi Balmer scored twice late in the second half as the University of Delaware field hockey team stunned No. 12 Northeastern University 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.

Junior All-America candidate Erica LaBar and fellow junior Leah Geib also scored for the Fightin’ Blue Hens, now 6-2 and winners of three straight.

UD jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Geib at 12:19 and LaBar at 28:20 off a feed from senior Jessica Breault.

Northeastern then rallied for three straight goals, including two by Mari Creatini, to take a 3-2 lead.

Balmer's game-tying goal came at 63:41, as she slammed home a rebound off a shot by LaBar on a penalty corner to knot the score at 3-3. Just 3:10 later, Balmer converted a pass from LaBar for the game-winning goal.

UD freshman goalkeeper Megan Allen made three saves in earning her sixth win of the season, while Diana Nelson stopped three Delaware shots for Northeastern, which fell to 5-3.

Delaware returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 24, when it travels to Philadelphia to take on Temple University. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
