Delaware field hockey team to host Pacific

Junior Jessi Balmer posted her first career hat trick on Sunday.
1:40 p.m., Sept. 8, 2003--Riding a three-game winning streak, the University of Delaware field hockey team will play host to Pacific University in a game at 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 11, at Rullo Stadium.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens defeated the University of Pennsylvania 4-1 on Saturday in Philadelphia and Villanova University 4-3 on Sunday at Rullo Stadium. Those wins followed a 5-0 victory over Rutgers in the Blue Hen Classic.

In Sunday’s victory over Villanova, UD junior Jessi Balmer posted her first career hat trick, and freshman netminder Megan Allen made six saves. The last Delaware player to score three goals in a game was Julie Bryd, who did so against Boston University in 2001. Balmer scored the game-winner at 55:17 off one of Delaware's 13 penalty corners.

Villanova opened the scoring at 7:40 as Megan Foster converted a feed from Vanessa Pizzulli. UD answered as Balmer banged a loose ball past goalkeeper Erin Scott. Balmer added her second goal just nine minutes later, scoring on a penalty stroke to give the Hens a 2-1 halftime lead.

UD opened a two-goal lead seven minutes into the second half when freshman Stephanie Swain scored at 41:04. Villanova goals by Rory Rogers and Foster in a span of 56 seconds tied the game at three before Balmer scored the winner.

Delaware junior All-American candidate Erica LaBar failed to register a point for the first time this season, ending her nine-game regular-season point scoring streak that dated back to last season.

In the victory over Penn, UD freshman Katie scored once and added two assists.

Senior Jessica Breault and juniors Balmer and Lauren Carr also scored goals for UD.

Evans opened the scoring eight minutes into the contest. UD extended the lead to 2-0 when Breault scored off a feed from Evans at 28:25 before Penn’s Kristen Gray cut the advantage to 2-1 with a goal at 42:19.

Balmer put the Hens back up by two goals at the 50:23 mark and Carr added an insurance goal at 60:37, converting a pass from LaBar.

UD goalkeeper Allen recorded two saves before giving way to junior Heidi Hibshman after Carr's tally.
