Five Hen football players earn All-Academic honors

10:30 a.m., Dec. 1, 2003--Five members of the University of Delaware football team have been selected Verizon/College Sports Information Directors of America District 2 All-Academic.

Junior defensive end Ben Cross and sophomore wide receiver Joe Bleymaier were named to the first team, while senior offensive guard Jason Nerys, junior linebacker Mark Moore and junior defensive tackle Chris Mooney were named to the second team.

As first team selections, Cross and Bleymaier are now eligible for the national Academic All-American team. UD and West Virginia University are the only schools to be represented by five players on the team.

To be eligible for the award, scholar-athletes must be starters or key reserves for their team and must carry at least a 3.2 grade point index. District 2 includes all NCAA Division I-A and Division I-AA schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Cross, a junior defensive end, earned first team honors for the second straight season. A three-year letter winner, he has played in 11 games this season and has posted tackles 23 tackles, including 10 solo stops. He has 2.5 tackles for loss and also leads the team with three fumble recoveries. Cross has a 3.928 grade point average in civil engineering.

Bleymaier, a sophomore wide receiver, is a second-year regular after transferring from Arizona State University. He has played in all 12 games this season and has caught 16 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns. He also serves as UD’s holder on placements and scored a touchdown on an eight-yard run off a fake earlier in the season. He has a 3.45 grade point average as a history major.

Nerys, a senior, earned All-District 2 honors for the second time in his career. A team co-captain and third-year starter, Nerys earned first team All-Atlantic 10 Conference honors this season and was a pre-season The Sports Network All-American. A three-time member of the Atlantic 10 All-Academic team, he has a 3.417 grade point average as a fitness management major. He will play in the inaugural NCAA Division I-AA All-Star game Dec. 30 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Mooney, a junior, earned All-District 2 honors for the second straight year. A standout on the Blue Hen defensive line, he earned second team All-Atlantic 10 honors and has appeared in all 12 games with 29 tackles, including 8.5 for loss, and 3.5 quarterback sacks. He also has broken up three passes and blocked two kicks. Mooney has a 3.464 grade point average as an accounting major.

Moore, a junior, is a first-time honoree. A second-year starter, he has appeared in all 12 games this season and ranks fifth on the squad with 55 tackles, including 27 solo stops. He has three sacks for 19 yards and 5.5 tackles for losses of 23 yards. He also has broken up a pass and has forced two fumbles. Moore has a 3.245 grade point average as a biology education major.
