Students win engineering scholarships, awards

2:58 p.m., Feb. 27, 2004--National Engineers Week had special significance for two UD undergraduates and 12 high school students who plan to attend UD—they all received scholarships and monetary awards from the Delaware Engineering Society (DES).

The scholarships, awarded Thursday, Feb. 26, are designed to encourage Delaware students to pursue careers and studies in engineering.

Kevin M. Carter, of Danbury, Conn., a computer engineering senior, received the $1,000 Bangalore T. Lakshman Scholarship, and Joseph Leiva of Burtonsville, Md., a junior civil engineering major, received the $1,000 Bangalore T. Lakshman in Civil Engineering Award from DES.

In addition, 12 high school students who have expressed interest in studying engineering at the college level each received a $2,000 award, renewable for four years. Recipients planning to attend the University of Delaware include:

  • Candace Esham, of Millsboro, a student at Sussex Central Senior High School;
  • Betsy Hicks, of Cape Henlopen, Cape Henlopen High School;
  • Robert Hutchinson, of Wilmington, Charter School of Wilmington;
  • Brian Jones, of Brandywine Hundred, Salesianum High School;
  • Lindsey Kling, of Dover, Caesar Rodney High School;
  • Roshan Modi, of Bear, Charter School of Wilmington;
  • Kimberly Oyerly, of Houston, Lake Forest High School;
  • Dana Rathfon, of Lincoln, Milford Senior High School;
  • James Rickards, of Ocean View, Sussex Technical High School;
  • Alison Sanchez, of Brandywine Hundred, Brandywine High School;
  • Joshua Selekman, of Brandywine Hundred, Brandywine High School; and
  • Andrew Thomson, of Newark, Newark High School.
