UD skater takes top spot at collegiate nationals

4:30 p.m., Aug. 15, 2003--Jennifer Don, an incoming freshman at UD, took first place in the ladies singles figure skating competition at the National Collegiate Championships, held Aug. 7-9 in Minneapolis.

Don, originally from Sugarland, Texas, had been training in Las Vegas before moving to Delaware last year to train at UD. While completing her senior year at Glasgow High School, she began training in singles with Jeff DiGigregorio, the UD coach who previously worked with Olympic gold medalist Tara Lipinski.

Don also trains in pairs skating with partner Jonathon Hunt. The two are coached by Ron Ludington, director of UD’s Ice Skating Science Development Center. There was no pairs category in the National Collegiate Championships.

With her new gold medal securely won, Don, 18, said she is looking forward to continuing her training at UD and working toward a major in pre-med.

Two other skaters who train at UD, Kelsey Davidson and Robin Lee Freeman, also competed in the ladies division at the collegiate nationals. Davidson placed 12th, and Freeman placed 18th.
