Delaware’s Ben Cross named Student-Athlete of the Year

Ben Cross is the Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year.
3:33 p.m., Dec. 17, 2003--Ben Cross, a defensive end on the University of Delaware football team, has been named the Atlantic 10 Football Conference's Student-Athlete of the Year in voting conducted among the conference's sports information directors.

Cross enters Friday night's NCAA Division I-AA national championship game against Colgate University with 27 tackles, including 12 solo stops. The junior from Hamilton, Va., also has two and one-half tackles for loss, one-half of a quarterback sack and three fumble recoveries on the season. He is a vital cog in a UD defense that is yielding just 16.5 points and 118.9 rushing yards per game.

Cross has a 3.93 cumulative grade point average as a civil engineering major. The last two summers, Cross has interned at UD’s Center for Composite Materials.

He is a second-team College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America honoree after earning All-District II first-team honors each of the past two seasons. He is the first UD player since the 2000 season to be named to the Academic All-American team.

The Atlantic 10 Football Conference cited 65 student-athletes as members of its Academic All-Conference team.

In addition to Cross, Fightin’ Blue Hens named to the Academic All-Conference team are
