Newark Police investigate robbery of student; UD Police arrest man

2:41 p.m., Dec. 19, 2003--Newark Police are investigating the strongarm robbery of a UD student that occurred at 8:48 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 18, in the 5000 building of University Courtyard Apartments on Scholar Drive.

The student was walking in the hallway of the apartment building when he was approached by three young men who demanded his cell phone and ordered him to empty his pockets. The student tackled one of the suspects, and while the student was down, the other two suspects punched and kicked him. The three men then fled with his cell phone. A small white car, possibly a late ’80s or early ’90s Honda or Toyota, was seen leaving the area at a high rate of speed.

The student suffered contusions to the head and a split lip. He refused medical attention.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Bryda in the Newark Police Department at 366-7110, ext. 132, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.

That same day, University Police arrested John C. Turnbull, 37, of Newark, late Thursday for first degree robbery and trespassing, in connection with an incident at the Rodney Market around noon.

Turnbull allegedly engaged the clerk in conversation for about a half hour and then began acting odd, the clerk said. As he was leaving, he took some products from the store, including a can of soda and several candy bars. When told he would have to pay for the items, he intimidated the clerk by opening his jacket and implying that he might have a knife, although no knife was seen. After he left, University Police were contacted, and officers began an investigation.

Turnbull is at Gander Hill Prison in lieu of $20,750 secured bail.
