Newark Police investigate April 2 robbery on North College Avenue

3:52 p.m., April 2, 2004--Newark Police are investigating the robbery of an 18-year-old student that occurred just after midnight Friday, April 2, in the vicinity of the railroad tracks on North College Avenue.

The student was walking back to his residence hall when he was accosted from behind by a man who punched him in the face and stole money from his pocket. The suspect was described as in his early 20s, 5 feet 10 inches tall and 170 pounds. He fled in a waiting light-colored (possibly gray) SUV occupied by two or three other men.

The victim returned to his residence hall and told a member of the residence life staff about the incident, and police were called. The student had swelling on his face but refused medical treatment.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Andrew Rubin at 366-7110, ext. 135, the Newark Police Department at 366-7111 or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.

Students are cautioned about walking alone during late-night hours and should always be aware of their surroundings. An escort service is provided by the Department of Public Safety for students walking on the campus after dark and can be requested by dialing 831-2222 or picking up one of the many “blue light” phones throughout campus.
