Music educators group honors UD chapter

10:14 a.m., March 18, 2004--The University of Delaware chapter of the Collegiate Music Educator’s National Conference: National Association for Music Education (MENC) has been selected as a Collegiate Chapter of Excellence winner. Awards will be presented at the 2004 MENC national conference in Minneapolis April 14-18.

The award recognizes chapters for successful projects, programs and recruitment techniques.

UD’s collegiate MENC chapter is being recognized for outstanding recruitment techniques. Chapter adviser, Suzanne Burton, assistant professor of music education, said the chapter also won an award for membership growth, underscoring the success of its recruitment techniques.

Burton said the chapter developed two mentoring programs aimed at giving high school students a “slice of university life.” The first program, called “Music Major for a Day,” has high school seniors shadowing a music major throughout his or her day. “High school seniors live the life of a UD music major,” she said. The newest mentoring program will have seniors doing the same, but for a weekend.

“The chapter experienced a growth spurt last year,” Burton said. “This group has worked very hard and closely with the state organization and professionals in the field.”

At the national convention, participating in a panel discussion on “Partnering for Leadership” will be the chapter officers: Lisa Knorr, president, a senior from Collegeville, Pa.; Jacquelyn Seaborg, vice president, a senior from Ballston Spa, N.Y.; Danielle Ingram, secretary, a senior from Vauxhall, N.J.; and Pam Shortall, treasurer, a junior from Elkton, Md. Officers-at-large also attending the conference include Jessica Duome, a senior from Pipersville, Pa.; Julius Brown, a senior from Wilmington; and Kristin Bramley, a sophomore from Hamilton, N.J.

According to Burton, the chapter is trying to raise enough money to send all its officers to the national conference in April. To make a donation or get more information, call her at 831-0390 or send e-mail to [slburton@udel.edu].
