Acclaimed violinist teaches master class April 16 12:19 p.m., April 9, 2004--Paul Kantor, a world-renowned violinist and teacher, will lead a violin/viola master class at 1:25 p.m., Friday, April 16, in the Amy E. du Pont Music Building. Kantor, who is Eleanor H. Biggs Memorial Distinguished Professor of Violin at the Cleveland Institute of Music, will play informally, speak about his own career in music and answer questions from audience members. A member of the artist faculty at the Aspen Music Festival since 1980, Kantor holds bachelor of music and master of music degrees from the Juilliard School in New York City and has performed as a chamber musician with the New York String Quartet, the Berkshire Chamber Players, the Lenox Quartet and the National Musical Arts Chamber Ensemble. He chaired the string department at the University of Michigan for 13 years and has served as concertmaster of the New Haven Symphony, Aspen Chamber Symphony, Lausanne Chamber Orchestra and Great Lakes Festival Orchestra. He also has been a guest concertmaster of the New Japan Philharmonic and the Toledo Symphony Orchestra. His premiere performances include Dan Welchers Violin Concerto and John Coriglianos Red Violin Caprices. The master class, which is sponsored by the Department of Music, is free and open to the public, and string students are particularly encouraged to attend.
