4:35 p.m., April 28, 2004--UD chemistry and biochemistry students won four of 14 awards for undergraduate research papers during the 68th annual Intercollegiate Student Chemists’ Conference (ISCC) at Hood College in Frederick, Md., April 24.

ISCC showcases student presentations of undergraduate research before an audience of their peers.

Thirty-seven papers were presented in seven divisions by students from 13 colleges and universities in Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Heather Egolf-Fox, a junior chemistry education major of Collegeville, Pa., took first place in the biochemistry II division for her paper, "Controlling Neurite Outgrowth: AFM Analysis of Comb Polymer Patterned Features." Egolf-Fox’s mentor is Thomas Beebe, professor of chemistry and biochemistry

Julie Schwarzwalder, a junior chemistry major of Lindenwold, N.J., won first place in the inorganic chemistry division for her paper, ?Synthesis and Characterization of the Tris (3-tert-butyl-5-methyl-pyrazolyl) Borate Ligand and its Fe (I) Dinitrogen Complex." Her mentor is Klaus Theopold, professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

Sarah Redding, a junior biochemistry major of River Edge, N.J., won second place in the biochemistry I division for her work on "New Water-Soluble Phosphines for Biochemistry." Her mentor is Colin Thorpe, professor of chemistry and biochemistry

James Sarakatsannis, a senior biochemistry major of Cincinnati, Ohio, took second place in the biochemistry II division for his paper, "Characterization of Salt Bridges in Proteins." His mentor is Yong Duan, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

Also at the conference, Shweta Patel, a junior biochemistry major of Newark, presented her paper, "Vanillin Synthesis from Molecular Bromine and p-Hydroxybenzaldehyde" in the organic chemistry I division. Her mentor is Douglass Taber, professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

Accompanying the students were John Burmeister, Alumni Distinquished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Harold White and Burnaby Munson, both professors of chemistry and biochemistry.

UD students have won 82 ISCC awards since 1949. UD’s closest competitor is Franklin and Marshall College with 61 awards.

The University will host ISCC in 2007.
