UD takes second straight CAA Blood Challenge title

2:12 p.m., Dec. 12, 2003--UD has won the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Blood Challenge for the second consecutive year by collecting 108 more units of blood in one day than its closest competitor, the CAA announced Dec. 10. University of Delaware students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends combined to donate 311 units of blood on Nov. 19.

Towson University finished second with 203 units of blood collected, followed by UNC Wilmington with 190, Drexel University with 178 and Hofstra University with 177.

The Colonial Athletic Association Blood Challenge was once again an overwhelming success, with 1,926 attempted donors and 1,409 productive units of blood collected from the 10 CAA campuses. Those totals represent a 21 percent increase in the amount of blood collected from last year’s inaugural campaign.

“We are very proud to have participated in raising significant units of blood at this critical time of year,” CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager said. “We appreciate the efforts put forth by people on all of the CAA campuses towards this extremely worthwhile project and look forward to raising our donor totals even higher in the future.”

The CAA Blood Challenge was developed in 2002 at the suggestion of UD President David P. Roselle as a fun way to emphasize the critical importance of donating blood. Each CAA institution worked with its local blood service center and designated one day during the fall to conduct a campuswide blood drive. Student groups, faculty, staff and alumni were all encouraged to participate.

The University of Delaware was the winner of the CAA Blood Challenge for the second year in a row with 408 attempted donors and 311 units of blood collected. It was the largest single-day blood drive in the history of the Blood Bank of Delaware/Eastern Shore, breaking the record of 262 units they set a year ago. Seven of the league’s 10 institutions had more than 100 donors participate in the program.

“We are so pleased to have the CAA Blood Challenge to focus on the need for people to give blood, especially during the holiday season,” Dave Bonk, director of marketing for the Blood Bank of Delaware/Eastern Shore, said.

“The CAA Blood Challenge has several goals: to assist the communities in which CAA member institutions are located; to create school spirit through a competition in which students, staff and faculty can participate; and to create awareness of and excitement about the Colonial Athletic Association,” UD President David Roselle said. “We at the University of Delaware are in support of each of those goals, and we are delighted that our University colleagues—especially our students—have endorsed them by way of their championship participation.”

Yeager will present UD administrators with an award in recognition of their outstanding achievement during the basketball season.
