Free music CDs draw hundreds to Mallstock

Showing their new free music CDs are (from left) junior John Hamnet and sophomores Emily Helmeid, Timon Cartwright and David Tuke.
4:54 p.m., May 10, 2004--Hundreds of students converged on the North Green Saturday, May 8, and left with free music CDs, yo-yos, boomerangs and tips on using online music legally.

The theme for this year’s Mallstock, which ran from 2-7 p.m., was “Wild Wild West” and Sheriff YoUDee mingled with the crowds to promote the Code of the Web and share information about how downloading music affects musicians.

The hottest giveaways were CDs of music selected by students from collections freely available on the web. UD obtained permission from the artists and pressed 500 CDs of the songs.

Sophomore Thomas Bordley accepts the challenge of riding the “bungee bull.”
“The response from the students to the CD was universally positive,” Leila Lyons, director of Information Technologies-User Services, said. “The fact that students had picked out the music and participated in the project made it even more noteworthy. Giving out the CDs was an excellent way of giving a positive message about how students can use the technology legally.”

Entertainment for the free public event included “bungee bull”
riding, music selections by DJ Amaze and live music performances by Omnisoul, Mad Sweet Pangs, Marlon Spike, Alan Astor and SoleCraft.
