Delaware’s Riley is second in CAA cross country meet
11:15 a.m. Nov. 3, 2003--University of Delaware senior Patrick Riley finished second in the Colonial Athletic Association cross country championship meet held Saturday at Oregon Ridge Park in Baltimore, and in so doing led the Fightin’ Blue Hens to third place in the team competition.

Riley ran to second place with a time of 25:46 over the 8,000-meter course. His was the best conference finish for a UD men’s team competitor since 1962, when Roy Jernigan finished second at the Middle Atlantic Conference championship meet.
The UD women’s team finished sixth in the team standings, improving one place from 2002. The Hens were led by senior Erin Gemmill, who finished in 26th place with a time of 23:12 over the 6,000-meter course.
The William & Mary men captured their fourth straight team title with 20 points, followed by James Madison (54), Delaware (76), Virginia Commonwealth (126), Towson (153), Hofstra (164), George Mason (182), and the University of North Carolina Wilmington (228).
William & Mary and James Madison have finished first and second each of the last 12 CAA championships. UD has finished in the top three of its conference meet eight times in the last 11 seasons.
The William & Mary women’s team won its first CAA title since 1998, breaking a string of four straight championships by James Madison. The Tribe had 18 points, followed by James Madison (51), Hofstra (78), Towson (123), Virginia Commonwealth (140), Delaware (161), George Mason (186) and UNC Wilmington (202).
William & Mary's Ed Moran captured the individual title for the second straight year as he covered the course in a record time of 25:18, 36 seconds better than Riley. The Tribe placed seven runners in the top 10.
Also for the Hens, senior Mike Sadowsky finished in 13th place finish (26:39), sophomore Kevin DuPrey in 18th (27:09) and senior John Morgan in 23rd (27:40).
William & Mary's Ali Henderson won the women's meet after placing second a year ago. She covered the course in 20:12, 40 seconds better than teammate Emily Halm. The Tribe placed seven runners in the top 10.
Gemmill led the Hens for the second straight year after placing 24th a year ago. Also for the Hens, freshman Meghan Weaver finished 35th (23:55), sophomore Renee Gresh 37th (24:05) and sophomore Jenn Kutney 44th (24:25).
Both UD teams will continue action Saturday, Nov. 15, at the NCAA District II championships at Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania.
