Riley leads Delaware men to cross country victory
11:15 a.m., Oct. 20, 2003--The University of Delaware men's cross country team, led by individual champion Patrick Riley, placed eight runners in the top 10 in capturing the team title at the Delaware Invitational held Saturday morning at White Clay Creek State Park.
Senior Erin Gemmill placed fifth overall to lead the Fightin Blue Hen women to a second-place team finish. Towson University had seven runners in the top 10 to win the team title.
The meet was the final tune-up for the Hens before they compete in the Colonial Athletic Association championships Saturday, Nov. 1, at Oregon Ridge Park in Baltimore.
The Delaware men won their third straight meet team title and fourth of the year with 20 points, easily besting runner-up the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (61), Towson (64), Delaware State University (107) and Lincoln University (137) in the five-team field.
Riley captured his fourth individual title of the season and ninth of his career as he covered the 8,000-meter course in 25:36.24, 30 seconds faster than runner-up Barnabas Togom of UMES (26:06.00).
Also for the Delaware men, P.J. Meany finished third (26:33.19), Mike Sadowsky fourth (26:40.63), Kevin DuPrey fifth (26:43.56), Patrick Wilcox seventh (27:30.09), Matt Bryden eighth (27:39.67), Brad Dodson ninth (27:40.98) and Matt Harrell 10th (27:48.37).
In the women's 6,000-meter race, Towson posted 24 points to outdistance runner-up Delaware (49), UMES (73), Lincoln (109) and Delaware State (131) in the five-team field.
Eva Slavikova of UMES won the race in a time of 23:31.38, 27 seconds better than runner-up Megan Lerch of Towson. Delaware's Gemmill placed fifth overall with a time of 24:19.41.
Also for the Hens, Jennifer Kutney finished sixth (24:43.71), Allison Behrle 11th (25:16.47), Renee Gresh 14th (25:34.14), Mary Martini 17th (25:44.80) and Meghan Weaver 21st (26:05.00).
