UD cross country runners Riley, Gemmill cited by CAA

11:26 a.m., Sept. 17, 2003--The Colonial Athletic Association has honored two University of Delaware cross country runners, naming UD’s Patrick Riley the conference men’s cross country Runner of the Week and Erin Gemmill a Co-Runner of the Week with Ali Henderson of the College of William & Mary.

Riley won the men’s individual title in leading Delaware to a first-place finish at the Towson Invitational Saturday at Oregon Ridge Park. Riley’s time of 26:00 on the five-mile course was 33 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Riley, a senior, has led the Delaware team in 17 consecutive races, and the individual title at the Towson Invitational was the sixth individual title of his career.

Delaware placed six runners in the top 10 to claim the team title with 25 points, 26 points ahead of second-place finisher Virginia Commonwealth. Hofstra finished third in the event, and Towson placed fifth among the other CAA teams that competed in the eight-team meet.

Gemmill won the women’s individual title at the Towson Invitational with a time of 17:43 seconds on the 4,700-meter course. Gemmill, a senior, collected the fifth individual title of her career.

Delaware (79) finished third in the eight-team event behind fellow-CAA competitors Hofstra (43) and Towson (57). VCU (81) and George Mason (108) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, behind the Blue Hens.

Henderson, a two-time All-American, took the individual title at the Lou Onesty Cross Country Invitational hosted by the University of Virginia on Saturday.
