UD senior sets ATM challenge record

Senior Lauren Dana Leff withdrew a record $1,250 from an ATM in three minutes.
4:47 p.m., May 20, 2004--Senior Lauren Dana Leff withdrew a record $1,250 from an ATM in three minutes during an ATM challenge Thursday, May 20, at the Trabant University Center.

“It was amazing!” Leff, a biology major from Mount Laurel, N.J., said of the five $250 transactions she made in 2 minutes and 54 seconds. “I didn’t think I was going to get that much. I was nervous. The third time I started questioning if I was going to push the right buttons and not hit something like $2.50.”

The WSFS Bank ATM withdrawal challenge was one of the prizes in the UD's Senior Day drawing May 14 on The Green.

The previous record of $1,000 in three minutes was set during the first WSFS cash withdrawal challenge May 1 to celebrate the grand opening of a new branch in the Fox Run Shopping Center in Bear.

“I was really excited for her,” Jennifer McCollum, vice president and relationship manager at WSFS Bank, said. “It went beautifully. She beat our record.”

McCollum said the bank encourages students to use ATM cards and the UD-1 Card instead of carrying cash.

“Students are technologically savvy, and we want them to use ATMs because they are safe and convenient,” McCollum said.

Leff, who was cheered on by her twin sister, Alyson, said she had prepared for the challenge by making numerous $10 withdrawals, with coaching from her friend, senior Lisa Vernal. The fastest transaction took about 40 seconds, Leff said.

Leff, a part-time server at a New Castle restaurant, said she is planning to use the money to rent a shore house in Dewey.

“I think it’s neat,” Leff said. “Awesome!”

Presented by the Delaware Undergraduate Student Congress (DUSC), Senior Day this year included a drawing for special prizes, including the ATM challenge at WSFS and a new car, as well as music and food.
