Six men’s lacrosse players named to All-CAA team

2:56 p.m., May 7, 2004--The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) announced Thursday that six members of the University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team have been named to the All-CAA all-star squads.

Led by 26th year head coach Bob Shillinglaw, the 19th ranked Blue Hens enjoyed one of the nation’s finest turnarounds while compiling a 10-6 record this season.

The CAA all-star teams are selected from by vote from six league head coaches.

First team honors went to senior attackman Matt Alrich, who was recently named CAA Lacrosse Co-Player of the Week for the second time this season. The league’s leading scorer with 46 points on 34 goals and 12 assists, Alrich led Delaware scorers for the past two seasons. Alrich, who finished his career with 83 goals, posted 14 hat tricks during his career and scored a career-high five goals in the regular season finale against Denver.

CAA Co-Rookie of the Year Alex Smith earned a spot on the second team as a faceoff specialist. The fifth player in UD men’s lacrosse history to earn conference Rookie of the Years honors, Smith was ranked second in the CAA and fifth nationally for winning 204 of 322 faceoff attempts for a winning percentage of .634 percent. Smith also ranked second in the CAA and fourth in the NCAA with 105 groundballs, the highest total by a UD player since 1998. The twice-named CAA Rookie of the Week also scored five goals and added an assist this season.

Also earning second honors for the Delaware were freshman attackman Cam Howard, senior midfielder Ryan Metzbower, junior defenseman Ian Wright and goalkeeper Chris Collins.

Howard, who took CAA Rookie of the Week honors a league-leading four times this season, was UD’s second highest scorer and the league’s third leading scorer with 19 goals and a team-high 20 assists.

Three-time all-league honors recipient Metzbower finished his career with 79 goals and 26 assists, and was UD’s fourth leading scorer this season, scoring 15 goals and dishing out six assists from his midfield position.

Wright, a second year starter who earned All-CAA honors for the first time in his career, paced a Blue Hen defense that permitted just 8.5 goals per game this season. Delaware’s top defensive player, he also picked up 23 ground balls while starting all 16 games.

Collins, who started in 31 straight games, ranked among league and national leaders in save percentage and goals against average this season. A starter in all 16 games, Collins posted 174 saves with a .565 percentage, while allowing 134 goals for an 8.60 per game average, both second in CAA rankings and 19th nationally. His 376 saves have earned him the seventh spot in Delaware lacrosse history.
