Four UD athletes garner CAA honors

4:33 p.m., May 5, 2004--Four University of Delaware athletes have earned weekly honors from the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).

Matt Alrich, a senior attackman from Timonium, Md., was named CAA Lacrosse Co-Player of the Week, and Alex Smith, a freshman midfielder from Timonium, was named CAA Men’s Lacrosse Rookie of the Week.

Laura Streets, senior third baseman from Newark, Del., was named CAA Softball Player of the Week, and Carolynn Sloat, a freshman pitcher from Ballston Lake, N.Y., was named CAA Softball Rookie of the Week.

Alrich, a graduate of Calvert High School and the league’s leading scorer, with 42 points on 32 goals and 11 assists, picked up his second CAA Co-Player of the Week Award. During the Blue Hens 15-9 upset of No. 16 University of Denver at Rullo Stadium on May 1, Alrich posted his 14th career hat trick and became the 26th player in UD history to reach the 100-point career mark.

Smith, a graduate of Boys Latin High School of Md., won 20 of 28 faceoffs to lead the 19th ranked Blue Hen attack and added his third goal of the season while picking up a game-high 11 ground balls. He is second in faceoffs (6.33) and groundballs (6.33).

Streets, a graduate of Newark High School, led the 27-20-1 Blue Hens to three wins last week, including two from CAA rival Towson University in a key battle for a postseason playoff spot. A 7-for-15 appearance at the plate, including four doubles and two home runs, upped her league-leading batting average to .399. She also leads the league doubles at 19.

Sloat won a pair of games last week while compiling a 0.54 earned run average with 20 strikeouts. A graduate of Shenendehowa High School, N.Y., Sloat became the first UD pitcher to work 200 innings in a season and tossed her school-record 25th complete game.
