Donors make Oct. 16 blood drive at UD best ever

4:45 p.m., Oct. 20, 2003 p.m., Oct. 3, 2003--The second blood drive of the fall semester, held Oct. 16 in the Trabant University Center, was the most successful October blood drive ever at UD.

Shay Robb, school program and blood drive coordinator for the Blood Bank of Delaware/Eastern Shore (BBDES), said that 122 of 149 volunteers who signed up gave blood, compared to 73 total donors during last year’s two-day event, which was sponsored by Kappa Alpha, the Resident Student Association and Golden Key.

Robb also said that the success of the UD blood drive came at a critical time when area donations had declined because of a Sept. 30 vehicle accident, in which one of the two BBDES Bloodmobiles was totaled.

“Many lives will be saved as a result of your efforts,” Robb said. “This success could not have come at a more important time.”

Individuals who were unable to participate in the earlier blood drives may still sign up for the Colonial Athletic Association’s (CAA) “Have A Heart” blood challenge, which will be held from 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 19, in the Multipurpose Room of the Trabant University Center.

UD won the 2002 CAA “Have A Heart” blood drive, thanks to donors who contributed 262 units of blood during the largest single-day blood drive in BBDES history.

Potential donors for the Nov. 19 CAA blood drive at UD must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and have had no tattoos or body piercings in the last 12 months.

Fans, alumni and friends of UD in southern Delaware also can participate in UD’s “Have A Heart” blood drive from 1-6 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the Lewes Senior Center, 310A Nassau Park Rd., Lewes.

To sign up to donate blood at the Trabant University Center or the Lewes Senior Center for the Nov. 19 drive, call the Blood Bank of Delaware/Eastern Shore at (302) 737-8400.
