UD hosts sports clinic for visually impaired athletes Sept. 27 3:31 p.m., Sept. 23, 2003--On Saturday, Sept. 27, the University of Delaware will host the fourth annual Mid-Atlantic Sports Clinic for Blind and Visually Impaired Athletes. The daylong clinic, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Carpenter Sports Building, includes 15 different sporting and recreational events and is open to visually impaired competitors between 7 and 70 years of age. Events, which are coached in part by students from UDs Adapted Physical Education course, include rock climbing, wrestling, tandem cycling, golf, tumbling, archery, audio darts, swimming, powerlifting and various track and field competitions. Participants also will have the opportunity to compete against each other in soccer, basketball, beep baseball and goalball, a team sport designed specifically for blind athletes. Events begin after the 10 a.m. sign-in and will continue until a lunch break at approximately 11:45 a.m. Competitions resume at 1 p.m. and continue until the final scores are compiled at approximately 4:30 p.m. In past years, more than 60 athletes from along the East Coast have participated in the clinic, some coming from as far away as upstate New York. A number of competitors use the clinic as a training ground before entering regional, national and international sporting competitions for the visually impaired. The clinic is sponsored by the Delaware Association for Blind Athletes (DABA) and the Pennsylvania Association for Blind Athletes (PABA).
