Blue Hen baseball team signs four new players

10:01 a.m., Nov. 26, 2003--The University of Delaware has signed four baseball players to national letters of intent, Head Coach Jim Sherman announced Tuesday.

Joining the Fightin’ Blue Hens for the 2005 season will be Andy Hartstein, an infielder from Laurel (Del.) High School; Mike McGuire, a right-handed pitcher from Ridley (Pa.) High School; Scott Shockley, an outfielder and pitcher from Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes, Del.; and Adam Tsakonas, an infielder from Boyertown (Pa.) High School.

Hartstein is considered one of the best offensive players in Delaware and as a junior hit .409 with seven home run and 19 runs batted in. He played during the summer for the Sussex West American Legion team, hitting .348 with seven homers and 48 RBI. Hartstein is also a standout football player at Laurel, where he was a first team All-Henlopen Conference quarterback.

McGuire has been considered one of the top pitching prospects in Pennsylvania since his sophomore season, when he was named first team All-Central League and All-Delaware County after posting a 1.40 earned run average with 66 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched. In his only appearance last season, McGuire tossed a no-hitter, striking out 14 batters, before being lost for the season with an injury. He played for the Norwood American Legion this past summer and was the only sophomore pitcher in the state to be selected to the Pennsylvania East-West American Legion All-Star Game.

A multidimensional athlete, the 6-foot 7-inch McGuire was named an All-Central League football player as he guided Ridley to the second round of the state playoffs. Also, he played center on the Ridley basketball team that posted a 21-5 mark.

Shockley is an outfielder and pitcher who was named first team All-State after leading Cape Henlopen to a 16-4 record and a Henlopen Conference championship. He had a .482 batting average with five home runs, 24 runs batted in and 14 stolen bases. On the mound, Shockley went 5-1 with a 2.33 ERA and struck out 40 batters. Last summer, Shockley led his American Legion Post 28 team to a 31-5 record, hitting .443 with 11 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 32 runs batted in. Shockley is a second-generation Blue Hen as his father, Joe, was a standout shortstop for UD from 1977-1980, setting school records for consecutive games played (199) and career assists (603).

Tsakonas is an infielder who, as a junior, helped lead Boyertown to a berth in the state playoffs with a .375 batting average. He hit .500 as a sophomore to earn All-Pioneer Athletic Conference and All-Area honors. Last summer, Tsakonas hit .458 for the Boyertown American Legion team that finished 46-4 and qualified for the Pennsylvania state tournament. He is also a member of the Boyertown football team, having started as both a fullback and wide receiver since his sophomore season. He earned All-Conference second team honors as a junior.
