Blue Hen baseball team falls to George Washington

11:23 a.m., May 12, 2004--The University of Delaware baseball team had its nine-game winning streak stopped in a 15-12 loss to George Washington University on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens entered the bottom of the ninth inning trailing 15-4 then rallied for eight runs and brought the tying run to the plate in sophomore catcher Brian Valichka, who grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the game.

With the loss, UD falls to 28-17. George Washington improved to 37-14 and extended its winning streak to 13 games, tied for the longest in school history.

The Hens will return to action with a home game against Rutgers University of the Big East Conference at 3 p.m., Thursday, May 13, at Bob Hannah Stadium. The Scarlet Knights are 28-17 on the season.

In Tuesday’s loss, UD opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Steve Van Note hit a two-run home run and Kelly Buber followed with a solo shot.

George Washington tied the score 3-3 in the second and added three runs in the fourth, six in the seventh and three in the ninth.

UD’s Todd Davison scored in the bottom of the seventh on a ground out by Dave Harden, and the Hens added eight runs in a wild ninth inning that included five errors by George Washington.

Buber finished the day with three hits, two runs batted in and two runs scored, while Van Note had two hits, three runs batted in and two runs scored.

UD freshman Billy Harris suffered the loss, allowing eight hits and five earned runs in 3.2 innings of work.
