Delaware baseball team reaches 20-win standard

10:56 a.m., April 26, 2004--For the 32nd consecutive season, the University of Delaware baseball team has reached the 20-win mark. The Fightin’ Blue Hens raised their record to 20-16 with an 11-8 victory at Towson University in a Colonial Athletic Association contest played Sunday.

UD took two of three games from Towson in the weekend series, winning the opener 8-5 in 10 innings and losing the middle game 9-7 before bouncing back to win Sunday. UD is now 4-7 in conference play.

The Hens will host in-state rival Wilmington College at 3 p.m., Tuesday, April 27, at Bob Hannah Stadium before beginning a three-game weekend series at home against conference foe James Madison University on Friday, April 30.

Sunday’s game was a wild affair in which the Hens jumped out to a 7-0 lead but then fell behind 8-7 before scoring the final four runs of the game to win.

UD catcher Brian Valichka had three hits in five trips to the plate, three runs batted in and three runs scored. Designated hitter Kelly Buber had two hits, three runs batted in and two runs scored, and extended his hitting streak to 17 games. Joe Coudon picked up the win in relief.

The Hens also had difficulty holding on to the lead in Saturday’s game, jumping in front 5-1 before falling 9-7. Buber, third baseman Ryan Graham and right fielder Dave Harden had two hits apiece for the Hens.

In the opening game, which started Friday but was completed Saturday after a thunderstorm, the Hens scored three runs in the 10th for the win. Graham singled home the go-ahead run and first baseman Steve Van Note following with a two-run home run.

Graham had four hits in the game and Valichka and shortstop Todd Davison had three hits each. Mike Mihalik got the win.
