Delaware baseball team tops Temple, ends skid

UD’s Kelly Buber drove in two runs in the victory over Temple. The Hens are 4-2 when wearing the yellow jerseys.
9:53 a.m., April 8, 2004--Two streaks came to an end when the University of Delaware baseball team defeated Temple University 9-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens snapped a 10-game losing streak, improving to 14-14, and in the process ended Temple’s seven-game winning streak.

The two teams will meet again on Wednesday, April 14, in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic, which features area college teams. The game will be played at 3 p.m. at Ambler Field in Philadelphia.

In Wednesday’s victory, UD’s Brent Rogers had two triples and three runs batted in, while Kelly Buber had two runs batted in.

The Hens opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when Todd Davison singled home Buber for the first run of the game and Rogers followed with a triple to score Ed McDonnell and Davison.

UD tacked on three more in the bottom of the third to extend its lead to 6-0. Buber laced a pitch down the right field line to score Steve Van Note and Dave Harden before he scored on a passed ball.

Temple struck back for two runs in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth, UD’s Rogers hit his second triple of the game to score Davison for a 7-2 lead. Ryan Graham followed with an RBI ground out to score Rogers before Van Note slammed his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot over the centerfield fence, to make it 9-2.

UD pitcher Jarame Beaupre picked up his third win of the season, working five innings of two-hit ball and allowing just one earned run. He struck out five batters.

After the Liberty Bell Classic game, the Hens will host Colonial Athletic Association foe Old Dominion University in a three-game weekend series April 16-18 at Bob Hannah Stadium.
