Blue Hen baseball team to host Maryland today

9:31 a.m., March 31, 2004--Hoping to snap a seven-game losing streak, the University of Delaware baseball team will return to action with a game against the University of Maryland at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 31, at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Maryland, which competes in the powerful Atlantic Coast Conference, is 12-12 on the season after a 9-7 victory over Virginia Commonwealth University on Tuesday.

UD fell to 13-11 following an 11-2 loss to George Washington University on Tuesday at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Va.

George Washington’s Tom Shanley had four hits, including a grand slam, and five runs batted in.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens were held hitless through four innings and did not score until the seventh, when they pushed across their only two runs of the game. UD’s Ed McDonnell hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Dave Harden then Brian Flynn scored Kelly Buber on an RBI ground out.

UD freshman pitcher Chat Kerfoot suffered the loss, allowing 10 hits and 11 earned runs while striking out three in four innings of work.
