Hen baseball team tops Buffalo to extend streak

UD pitcher Mike Mihalik allowed just one hit in the victory over Buffalo.
10:05 a.m., March 19, 2004--Following an 11-0 victory over the University of Buffalo on Thursday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium, the University of Delaware baseball team has now won 13 straight games.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens (13-4) will try to keep that streak alive with a two-game home series against the University of Connecticut with games at 1 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, March 20-21.

Senior Mike Mihalik and relievers Mike Chiciak and Billy Harris combined on a one-hitter to defeat Buffalo.

The one-hitter came just one day after senior transfer Jarame Beaupre threw a no-hitter against the University of Hartford. In the last three games, UD pitchers have allowed a total of just seven hits.

Mihalik (2-1) went seven innings, allowing just an infield hit to Joe Mihalics in the sixth inning and striking out nine batters. Redshirt freshman Chiciak, making his collegiate debut, and freshman Harris each pitched a perfect inning to complete the shutout.

UD second baseman Brock Donovan knocked in four runs to lead the Hens.

Buffalo, coming off an 11-10 loss at Coppin State University on Thursday, dropped its fifth straight game and fell to 1-11 on the season. Pitcher Jeff Loveys (0-2) took the loss on the mound as he allowed seven hits and four runs in five innings.

The Hens banged out 13 hits, including five for extra bases. Donovan led the way with four hits in five trips to the plate, and Steve Van Note added three hits and extended his hitting streak to 13 games.

Ed McDonnell ripped a pinch-hit three-run home run to highlight a five-run seventh inning.

UD jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings. Center fielder Brent Rogers hit a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the second inning, and shortstop Todd Davison and Van Note each delivered run-scoring hits in a three-run fourth.

The Hens blew the game open with the five-run seventh inning as they batted around. Donovan knocked in two runs with a single, and McDonnell hit his home run.

UD added on two more runs in the eighth inning on a two-run double to right field by Donovan.
