Hen pitcher Beaupre throws no-hitter against Hartford

Jarame Beaupre threw a no-hitter against Hartford.
10:11 a.m., March 18, 2004--University of Delaware starting pitcher Jarame Beaupre threw a no-hitter in a 13-0 victory over the University of Hartford on Wednesday morning at Factory Field in Baltimore.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens played an afternoon game, as well, defeating the host University of Maryland Baltimore County 6-1.

In the morning game, Beaupre faced just 28 batters, held Hartford to two base runners and struck out seven batters. It was just the sixth no-hitter in UD history.

Beaupre, a senior from Colorado Springs, Colo., who transferred to UD from Drexel University, retired the first 11 batters he faced before walking Ron Acabbo with two outs in the fourth inning. He then retired the next five batters before hitting Kyle O'Neill with a pitch with one out in the sixth inning. He struck out O'Neill and Ryan Crowley to end the game.

The Hens broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third when they plated a total of seven runs, six on a pair of three-run homers by right fielder Dave Harden and center fielder Brent Rogers.

Rogers finished the game with three hits and four runs batted in, and Harden had two hits and three runs batted in. Third baseman Ryan Graham, first baseman Steve Van Note and designated hitter Kelly Buber also had two hits apiece.

Against UMBC, Harden hit his 11th home run of the season with a solo shot in the sixth inning.

Van Note extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a pair of two doubles, and second baseman Brock Donovan knocked in two runs.

Pitcher Mitch Heckert started and picked up the win for the Hens, allowing all six UMBC hits and striking out six batters. Relievers Scott Rambo, Chad Kerfoot and Joe Coudon each set UMBC down in order for an inning.

With the victories, UD is now 12-4.

The Hens are scheduled to host the University of Buffalo at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, March 18, at Bob Hannah Stadium. They will remain at home for games against the University of Connecticut at 1 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, March 20-21.

UMBC will visit at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 23.
