Blue Hen baseball team sweeps rival Delaware State

10:53 a.m., March 8, 2004--The University of Delaware baseball team completed a three-game sweep on rival Delaware State University with a 16-7 victory on Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens came from behind to win Friday’s opener 6-5 then followed with a 9-4 win on Saturday and the 16-7 win on Sunday.

With the sweep, UD improved to 6-4 and will carry a six-game winning streak into a meeting with Rider University at 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 10, in Lawrenceville, N.J.

“We're still hot swinging the bats and everyone is seeing the ball well. It looks like a beach ball to them,” UD Head Coach Jim Sherman said. “This is Delaware baseball at its finest.”

In Sunday’s game, senior Steve Van Note and sophomore Brock Donovan each drove in three runs and junior pitcher Chris Garrick struck out seven batters in five innings of work.

Junior Ryan Graham had four hits and two runs batted in, and fellow junior Ed McDonnell had two hits and two RBI.

On Saturday, junior Dave Harden belted his seventh home run of the season, and junior pitcher Scott Rambo allowed just one earned run over six innings.

First baseman Kelly Buber and third baseman Brent Rogers both had two hits and three runs batted in.

Friday’s game was the closest, with junior right fielder Ed McDonnell rapping a single to drive home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

Harden had a big game, with four hits and five runs batted in. Reliever Mitch Heckert picked up the win with three scoreless innings.
