11:57 a.m., Feb. 11, 2004--The University of Delaware baseball team will open the 2004 season with two trips to the Carolinas.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens will visit Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C., for a three-game series against the Chanticleers from Friday, Feb. 13, through Sunday, Feb. 15.

The Hens will then travel to East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., for a three-game series against the Pirates from Friday, Feb. 20, through Sunday, Feb. 22.

UD will play its home opener, a doubleheader against St. Joseph’s University, beginning at noon, Saturday, Feb. 28, at Bob Hannah Stadium. UD will host the Hawks again at 1 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 29.

The Hens, led by Head Coach Jim Sherman, are coming off a season in which they went 21-32 overall and 7-13 in the Colonial Athletic Association.

UD returns senior captain Mike Mihalik, a pitcher who went 4-3 with a 3.44 earned run average in 2003. Other returning pitchers are juniors Jason Rogers, Scott Rambo and Chris Garrick.

In addition, the Hens return infielders Brock Donovan, Todd Davison and Brent Rogers. Returning outfielders are Steve Van Note and Dave Harden.

Key newcomers are juniors Kelly Buber, a catcher from Yuba College in California; Ryan Graham, an infielder from Triton Junior College in Illinois; and Ed McDonnell, an outfielder from Seton Hall University.

In a preseason poll of CAA coaches, UD was picked to finish fifth in the nine-team conference. Defending champion Virginia Commonwealth, which returns five starters and five of its eight top pitchers, was picked to finish first.
