Blue Hens picked fifth in Colonial baseball poll

10:21 a.m., Jan. 15, 2004--The University of Delaware baseball team has been picked fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association, according to a pre-season coaches poll released Wednesday.

Defending champion Virginia Commonwealth University was the first-place pick with 64 total points.

The College of William & Mary was second with 53 points, followed by the University of North Carolina Wilmington with 49 points and George Mason University with 46 points.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens received 29 points in the poll. They return 14 letter winners from the 2003 team that went 21-32 and placed fourth in the Colonial Division of the CAA.

Junior infielder Brock Donovan, who had a .272 batting average last season, is the team's top returning hitter, and fellow infielder Todd Davidson returns after hitting .254 as a freshman.

The pitching staff is anchored by senior Mike Mihalik, who posted a 3.44 earned run average and tied for the team lead in wins with four.

James Madison and Old Dominion universities were tied for sixth place with 25 points, followed by Towson University with 22 points and Hofstra University with 11 points.

UD opens the baseball season with a trip to the Carolinas. The Hens will play a three-game series at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C., Feb. 13-15, then move on to play a second three-game series at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., Feb. 20-22.

UD will play its home opener, a doubleheader against St. Joseph’s University, beginning at noon, Saturday, Feb. 28, at Bob Hannah Stadium.
