Silent auction highlights faculty work, benefits students

5:15 p.m., March 30, 2004--A silent auction featuring work by faculty in UD’s Department of Fine Arts and Visual Communications will be held from 4-8 p.m., Friday, April 2, in the University Gallery at Old College.

Now in its second year, this auction, which last year raised more than $6,000, will showcase selected faculty works and raise money for merit-based scholarships for UD art students.

The auction coincides with the annual Visual Arts Faculty Exhibition, which runs March 30-April 11, and a retrospective show by Larry Holmes, which will be on view from March 30-May 9, both in the University Gallery. A special “sneak preview” for students and the general public will be held from 4:30-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 30.

Works for auction include

  • Paintings by Virginia Bradley, department chair; Hilton Brown, Harriet T. Baily Professor; Larry Holmes, former chair and retiring professor; Rene Marquez, assistant professor; and Robert Straight, professor;
  • Photographs by Bill Deering, assistant professor; Priscilla Smith, associate professor; and John Weiss, professor;
  • Ceramics and sculpture by Amalia Amaki, curator of UD’s Paul R. Jones Collection of Art and assistant professor of Black American Studies; Vera Kaminski, associate professor; David Meyer, assistant professor; and Victor Spinski, professor;
  • Illustrations and prints by Rosemary Lane, professor; and Robyn Phillips-Pendleton, associate professor; and
  • Graphic design and visual communication pieces by Hendrik-Jan Francke, assistant professor; and Raymond Nichols, professor.

    The silent auction on April 2 will begin at 4 p.m. with a retirement party for Larry Holmes and opening remarks by Mark Huddleston, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Refreshments will be served.

    The University Gallery is located on the second floor of Old College at the corner of Main Street and North College Avenue.
