Student Activities Night draws hundreds

4:38 p.m., Feb. 13, 2004--More than 300 students attended the Spring Semester Activities Night held from 7-9 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 12, in Multipurpose Rooms A, B and C of the Trabant University Center.

The two-hour event showcased 80 registered student organizations, fraternities, sororities and club sports at UD.

The event, similar to Fall Activities Night held the first week of fall semester, gives new students the opportunity to learn more about the variety of organizations on campus and returning students a second glance at UD organizations.

Lalena Luna, program coordinator for the activities and program office, said the spring activities night is extremely important for both transfer and freshman students.

“We have new students transferring in mid-year, and [activities night] gives them the opportunity to see what’s out there,” she said. “In addition, freshman who came in September are thinking about ways to get involved outside the classroom and come with specific interests in mind.”

Sophomore Stacy Richards said she came to the event to see the different types of organizations on campus.

“I like adding new experiences to my life,” she said. “I thought this would be a good chance to see the kinds of organizations on campus and how they fit my interest.”

Student organizations enticed onlookers to visit their booth through elaborate displays, pictures, flyers, candy and live vocal performances.

Sophomore Sara Linton, a member of the Golden Blues, a coed a capella group, said she feels the night was successful.

“I think it’s important because it gives the students another opportunity to come out and see what the University has to offer,” she said, “after they have made the transition to college.”

The free event was sponsored by the Activities and Programs Office. Activities Night is part of the "Just UDo It" campaign, designed to increase awareness of the many sanctioned, organized activities UD has to offer students.
