Hens Hall, Johnson named A10 Players of the Year

9:03 a.m., Nov. 25, 2003--University of Delaware seniors Andy Hall and Shawn Johnson swept the Atlantic 10 Football Conference Player of the Year awards announced Monday.

Hall, a senior quarterback who transferred to UD from Georgia Tech, was named the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year, and Johnson, a senior defensive end who transferred to UD from Duke, was named the Defensive Player of the Year in a vote of the league coaches.

In addition, 11 Fightin’ Blue Hens were named to the three All-Atlantic 10 teams.

University of Massachusetts head coach Mark Whipple, whose team shared the Atlantic 10 Conference title with UD, was named Coach of the Year, University of Maine quarterback Ron Whitcomb was named Rookie of the Year and Rhode Island kick returner Wendall Williams was named Special Teams Player of the Year.

Hall and Johnson are the first teammates to sweep the league Player of the Year awards since 1996, when James Madison University's Curtis Keaton and Chris Morant were honored.

Hall and Johnson were joined on the All-Atlantic 10 first team by senior offensive guard Jason Nerys.

Named to the All-Atlantic 10 second team were senior running back Germaine Bennett, junior defensive lineman Chris Mooney, junior linebacker Mondoe Davis and junior cornerback Sidney Haugabrook.

Named to the third team were senior tight end Rick Lavelle, junior offensive tackle Trip DelCampo, junior kicker Brad Shushman and senior safety Mike Adams.

Nerys, Mooney, Lavelle and Haugabrook were all repeat performers on the All-Atlantic 10 team.

Hall, Johnson, Adams and Nerys have been selected to play in the inaugural NCAA Division I-AA All-Star Game scheduled Tuesday, Dec. 30, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Hall is the third player in UD history to be named the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year, joining quarterbacks Rich Gannon (1986) and Leo Hamlett (1995). He has completed 195 of 303 passes for 2,285 yards and 21 touchdowns with just six interceptions. He has also rushed for 630 yards and eight touchdowns. His 64.4 passing percentage is on pace to set a UD single season record and his 146.61 passing rating and 242.9 yards of total offense per game rank among the national leaders.

A three-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, Hall is a finalist for the Walter Payton Award presented to the top offensive player in NCAA Division I-AA football each season.

A first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference pick as a Blue Devil in 2002, Johnson has continued his fine play as a Blue Hen. This season he has 54 tackles, a conference-leading 12 sacks and 21 tackles for losses. He has also broken up five passes, forced three fumbles and recovered two other fumbles. His 12 sacks are just four shy of the UD single season record.

Johnson is a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award presented to the top defensive player in NCAA Division I-AA football. He is only the second UD player to be named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year, joining linebacker Brian McKenna who was honored in 2000.

Nerys, a second team All-Atlantic 10 performer in 2002 and a pre-season All-American, is a third-year starter for the Blue Hens and helped UD rank second in the Atlantic 10 with 33.8 points per game. The Hens also ranked third in the league in rushing offense (206.2) and fourth in total offense (409.4). Nerys and his linemates allowed just 19 sacks all season.

Bennett, a senior, ranks second in the Atlantic 10 in rushing with 211 attempts for 1,136 yards and 12 touchdowns. He rushed for 100 or more yards four times and never had less than 66 yards all season. He became the first UD running back to reach the 1,000-yard mark since 1994.

Mooney, a junior, is a Verizon Academic All-American candidate. He has 29 tackles this season, including 19 solo stops. He ranks third on the team with 9.5 tackles for loss, had 3.5 sacks, broke up three passes, recovered a fumble and blocked two kicks.

Davis, a junior, thrived in 2003 as a linebacker after playing defensive end as a sophomore. He leads the Blue Hens in tackles with 81, including 41 solo stops, and has 5.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Haugabrook, a junior, earned All-Atlantic 10 honors for the third straight year. He ranks third on the team with 68 total tackles, including 45 solo stops. He has 2.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, a team-high seven pass breakups, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble and one blocked kick. He also ranks second in the Atlantic 10 in punt returns with an average of 13.5 yards per return.

Lavelle, a senior, earned third team honors for the second straight season. He ranks fourth among all Delaware receivers with 17 receptions for 197 yards and one touchdown.

DelCampo, a junior, was a first-year starter this fall, taking over in pre-season when Saul Freund was injured. He helped UD rank second in the Atlantic 10 in scoring, third in rushing offense and fourth in total offense.

Shushman, a junior, took over the full-time kicking duties in his second season after transferring from Louisville. He connected on 47 of 48 extra point attempts, hit on 13 of 19 field goal attempts and ranks third in the league in scoring with 86 points. He also made three touchdown-saving tackles on kickoffs during the 2003 campaign.

Adams, a senior co-captain, was honored despite missing four full games and all but one quarter of another due to a broken fibula. Adams returned to action in 2003 after sitting out all but the season opener in 2002 with a hip injury. This season, he has 43 tackles, including 24 solo stops. He leads the team with three interceptions and also had 2.5 tackles for loss and four pass breakups.
