2:55 p.m., Sept. 12, 2003--To increase campus safety and address concerns of rising assault crimes in Newark, Public Safety is offering Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) classes throughout the fall semester.

Each 15-hour course, which is offered in a series of five three-hour classes, teaches women how to combat sexual assaults and rapes through awareness and hands-on self-defense training. The program is offered from 6 to 9 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and is free to all female students, faculty and staff at UD.

The classes, which include realistic simulation scenarios, are taught by certified instructors. Classes also teach participants how to improve home and personal security, how to avoid date rape and how to abide by laws when carrying Mace or other weapons. All self-defense tactics are designed to be used in a variety of confrontational situations, and class participants are encouraged to practice their techniques on officers dressed in padded equipment.

The first five-week course in basic RAD training begins Monday, Sept. 15, at the Carpenter Sports Building and continues through Monday, Oct. 13. The second course begins Thursday, Sept. 18, at McKinly Lab and continues through Thursday, Oct. 16. The final course offered for the fall semester begins Tuesday, Oct. 21, at McKinly Lab and continues through Tuesday, Nov. 18.

Advance RAD training is also offered in a five-week course beginning Wednesday, Oct. 22, at McKinly Lab. This class refines skills learned in basic RAD training and requires successful completion of the preliminary course.
