4-H exhibits featured at State Fair

10:55 a.m., July 16, 2003--More than 5,000 4-H exhibits are on display at the Delaware State Fair, which runs through July 26 in Harrington. The exhibits, which include textiles and clothing, photography, entomology, gardening, landscaping, crafts, conservation, vegetables, woodworking and others, give 4-Hers an opportunity to showcase their accomplishments, according to Joy Sparks, state 4-H coordinator for Cooperative Extension at UD.

The 4-H exhibits are on display at The Centre, which opened its doors at last summer’s fair while still under construction. “Last year they were working on the building as we set up. It was a little chaotic,” Sparks said. “This year, however, we’ll be able to set up and get organized quickly.”

The 4-H awards celebration, scheduled at 5 p.m., Saturday, July 26, is the highlight of the Sate Fair for many. The ceremony recognizes state winners in the various 4-H activities, and the Delaware 4-H Foundation will present five college scholarships during the celebration.

“4-H provides fantastic opportunities for young people,” Sparks said. “The State Fair is just one example. We think that 4-Hers and Delaware families will have a lot of fun at the State Fair this year.”
