PTTP drama chronices 1880s clash of Irish and English cultures

3:35 p.m., Feb. 26, 2003--UD’s Professional Theatre Training Program debuts its production of Brian Friel’s “Translations” at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 27, in Hartshorn Hall.

Richie Haratine, as Manus, attempts to teach Denise Montgomery's Sarah how to speak.

Set in Donegal, Ireland, in 1883, the gripping drama tells the story of a small community on the brink of irrevocable change. British soldiers and engineers enter the Irish town of Baile-Beag and attempt to Anglicize their Irish traditions and language. The two cultures come into conflict with the realization that language is central to basic identity, values and culture.

“Translations” can be seen at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 27 and 28 and March 1 and 14. Matinee performances are set for 12:30 p.m., March 1 and 16.

Ticket prices range from $7 to $17. For more information, or to purchase tickets, call 831-2204.
