In Memoriam
Shirley M. Tarrant

April 15, 2003— Shirley M. Tarrant, 67, died at home on Sunday, April 13, after a brief struggle with cancer.

A 1957 graduate of the University of Delaware, she was an elementary school teacher in the Newark area for several years.

Mrs. Tarrant is best remembered as a lifelong community activist. She was the prime mover in the establishment of the Newark Girls Club, and she served as president of the Suburban County Hospital Task Force during a lengthy struggle that resulted in the construction of the current Christiana Hospital. At the time of her death, she chaired the Delaware Health Facilities Authority and served on the Board of Trustees of Christiana Care.

Her honors included the 1975 Newark Chamber of Commerce Wallace Johnson Award for Outstanding Person of the Year and UD’s 1985 Outstanding Alumnus Award. Her favorite pastimes were boating, fishing and avidly following University of Delaware athletic teams.

At her request, there will be no viewing, funeral or memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts in her memory be made to support students in the Department of Medical Technology. They may be sent to the Office of University Development, Academy Building, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19716.
