In Memoriam
Marjorie J. Tilghman

March 13, 2003—Marjorie J. Tilghman, 95, alumna, benefactor and daughter of a UD trustee, died Sunday, March 9.

Born in Newark in 1907, she was the daughter of Everett C. Johnson and Louise Staton Johnson. Her father was a member of the Class of 1899, served as a trustee of the University of Delaware from 1911 until his death in 1926 and also was founder of the Newark Post and the Press of Kells.

Her first husband, the late Francis H. Squire, was a member of the faculty of the history department, dean of the College of Arts and Science and dean of the University from 1945-56. Dr. Squire died in 1956.

Mrs. Tilghman graduated from the University of Delaware in 1928 and completed graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania in 1929 and 1930. She taught at Ridley Park and later was a member of the faculty and chairman of the history department of the Tatnall School, where she received the school’s outstanding teacher award in 1974.

Author of the book “British Views of the American Revolution,” she was honored by the American Association of University Women and became the first teacher in Delaware to receive the Freedom Foundation Award.

A member of Phi Kappa Phi honorary society, Mrs. Tilghman was a past president of the University of Delaware Alumni Association and an honorary lifetime member of its board of directors.

In 1973, she married Cornelius A. Tilghman Sr., a UD graduate who was named a Rhodes Scholar in 1926. Mr. Tilghman died in July 1998.

In 1998, Mrs. Tilghman made a bequest to the University to establish two named professorships—one in the Department of History and another in the Department of English—in memory of her two deceased husbands.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 15, at R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 West Main St., Newark. Interment will be in Welsh Tract Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the University of Delaware Library.
