Sicilia honored by Downtown Newark Partnership

3:25 p.m., June 19, 2003--Domenick B. Sicilia, director of UD’s Bob Carpenter Center, was honored Thursday, June 12, with an Outstanding University Volunteer Award from the Downtown Newark Partnership.

In presenting the award, Barbara Kreppel, UD associate vice president, said, “Domenick has been involved in downtown Newark enhancement since the mid-1980s. He was a member of the very first design committee for downtown Newark, assisting in the development of design guidelines for the street which are still in use.”

Sicilia served as vice president of the Newark Business Association (NBA) from 1993-98 when the NBA was dissolved to make way for the Downtown Newark Partnership.

“Domenick was extremely helpful during the transition from the Newark Business Association to the Downtown Newark Partnership tirelessly offering his assistance, insights and expertise in organizational management and consensus building,” Kreppel said. “He was largely responsible for moving the business association forward to accept the challenge of creating an umbrella organization for downtown enhancement.”

Kreppel also noted that Sicilia has served as vice chairman of the special events committee since 1998, “keeping the group focused and forward thinking,” and she praised him for being a hands-on volunteer, working every Newark Nite and Community Day for more than a decade.

Sicilia, who has lived in Newark for 22 years, said he was surprised and honored to receive the award. “It’s always especially nice to be honored by your peers,” he said. “This is a great group of people, and it has been a pleasure to serve and volunteer with them.”

Downtown Newark Partnership is a coalition of the City of Newark, UD, downtown business owners and Newark residents who work together to promote and preserve Newark’s unique downtown area as community and commerce center.
