June 14, 2002--Former University of Delaware standout Lisa Myers has been hired as a full-time assistant coach for the Blue Hen softball team, head coach B.J. Ferguson announced Thursday, June 13.
Myers, 29, who most recently served as an education coordinator with the New Castle Police Athletic League, replaces Kerrie Porter, who served the last two seasons with the UD staff. Myers will officially start on July 1.
"We are extremely thrilled to have Lisa Myers re-joining our staff in a full-time capacity," said Ferguson, who will begin her 23rd season as head coach at Delaware next spring. "She was an exceptional player and record holder here at UD and she possesses a great deal of knowledge and a passion for the game. Lisa will be heavily involved in the recruiting process along with teaching and coaching all aspects of the game."
This will be Myers' second coaching stint at UD under Ferguson. She served as a part-time assistant for the Blue Hens during the 1996 and 1997 seasons. The 1997 squad posted a 22-19 record and placed second in the America East standings with a 9-4 record. Ferguson was named America East Coach of the Year that season.
A two-year captain for the Blue Hens, Myers was a standout outfielder and shortstop and a four-year starter from 1992-95, leading the Blue Hens to a second place finish in the America East conference in 1993. She earned second team All-America East honors in 1993, 1994, and 1995 and earned All-Mid Atlantic Region honors as a senior in 1995 at shortstop.
She was a Dean's List student at Delaware and was a member of the 1995 America East Academic Honor Roll for student-athletes.
Myers ranks among the top 10 in virtually every career statistical category in Delaware history and ended her career ranked first in doubles (28), games played (155), at bats (496), hits (164), and total bases (211), second in stolen bases (38) and fourth in batting average (.330). She started all 155 games during her career.
She batted .308 as a freshman, .293 as a sophomore, .303 as a junior and .395 as a senior, when she set several school records with 62 hits, 30 runs scored, 10 doubles and 22 stolen bases.
Myers, who earned her degree in physical education studies with a minor in mathematics from the University of Delaware in 1996, previously was employed as a distance learning instructor at Glasgow High School in Newark and as a senior operations manager and program manager with Junior Achievement of Delaware, Inc. She has been employed with PAL since December, 2000, supervising after-school programs for 8-18 year olds, managing wellness programs, coordinating life skills activities and serving as a mentor and instructor.
A native of Broomall, Pa., where she was an all-county selection at Marple-Newtown High School, Myers resides in Wilmington.
Delaware posted a 19-27 record during the 2002 season and placed fourth with a record of 5-9 as a first-year member of the Colonial Athletic Association.
