Delaware announces softball recruits

July 1, 2002--UD softball coach B.J. Ferguson has announced that three players have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Blue Hen softball program for the 2003 season.

The players are pitcher Lindsay Jones of Wisconsin, utility player Kinsey Lowrey of Florida and shortstop Heather Wrenn of northern Virginia.

Jones was the ace pitcher for South Milwaukee High School, which this season finished 20-1, won the Southeast Conference title and was ranked No. 3 among Wisconsin's Division I schools. She was one of the most dominant pitchers in the Milwaukee area, setting a new school mark with 241 strikeouts for the 2002 season. She was named Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Player of the Year.

Jones allowed just four walks and compiled a 0.22 earned run average in 127 innings of work. Her lone loss of the season came in a 13-inning, 1-0 defeat in the sectional semifinals.

Lowrey's Choctawatchee High School team qualified for the Northwest Florida District tournament, but was eliminated in the first round. Lowrey, a native of Shalimar, Fla., earned all-area honors the last two years. This year, she led the team with 25 runs batted in and struck out a team-low four times all season. Lowrey played catcher this past season for Choctawatchee but is expected to be able to play several positions at Delaware.

Wrenn is the starting shortstop for Centreville High School in northern Virginia. Her team finished as the Class AAA Northern Regional runners-up. She earned first-team all-district honors, was selected Centreville High's Sportswoman of the Year and was a scholar athlete. Wrenn also plays outfield and third base for her ASA squad.
