241 faculty and staff recognized with Service Awards

Oct. 17, 2002--Some 241 faculty and staff members were honored for their service to the University of Delaware at a Service Awards luncheon Wednesday, Oct. 16.

Eighty-five faculty and staff were recognized for five years of service; 51 for a decade of service; and 105 for 15 years of service to UD.

UD President David Roselle said the impact of the combined years of service that these individuals have provided at UD shows up most in the positive effects they have on students.

“I know I hear stories almost every day from UD alumni, most recently at Homecoming, recounting how they’ve been inspired or encouraged by a faculty member, helped by a member of the staff, believed in by a professional staff member,” he said. “And, that encouragement and help have made all the difference in seeing that our students become all they can be.”

Roselle cited quotes describing the lasting impact of faculty and staff from several of 12 alumni who were recognized for their achievements with Presidential Citation awarded Oct. 11. One recipient of the Presidential Citation wrote: “At the University, I was lucky to have many mentors, both in the classroom and the gym, and the lessons that they shared continue to guide me today. The environment at Delaware is exceptionally supportive. The faculty, students and even the town of Newark foster a strong sense of community, which had a lasting impression on me.”

Roselle concluded the luncheon by pointing out that spending five years with an employer is becoming unusual, and staying 10 and 15 years at one institution is even more rare. “Your demonstrated dedication to the University of Delaware is certainly one of the added values that makes it such a special place to be and that helps us achieve our goals,” he said.
