Karen Wetterhahn, the first woman professor in Dartmouth Colleges chemistry department, was an experienced scientist who conscientiously followed safety practices in the lab. However, while performing a procedure involving dimethylmercury, a few drops spilled on her latex glove, and the result was increasing disability, a coma and ultimately death.
Michael Blayney, Dartmouths health and safety director, will speak on dimethylmercury and the death of Dr. Wetterhahn at 4 p.m., Tuesday, March 19, in 131 Sharp Laboratory and discuss the limitations of hazard and risk information for infrequently used laboratory chemicals. All lab workers are especially invited to this lecture.
The program is sponsored by Occupational Health and Safety, and an article on this topic is available at Occupational Health and Safetys web site at [http://www.udel.edu/OHS/Dartmouth/drtmtharticle.html].
