Jazz and ragtime music at UD Nov. 10

Bit O' Rhythm and the Superior Ragtime Orchestra are combining forces in a performance at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 10 in the University of Delaware’s Performing Arts Series. The performance, showcasing jazz and ragtime music from the early 20th century, will be held in Mitchell Hall, South College Avenue, Newark.

Artists Linda Henderson, on piano, and Harvey Price, on xylophone, are two members of the early ragtime and jazz group, Bit O' Rhythm. The duo has performed together since 1982.

Price is an assistant professor of music at UD where he directs the marimba, steel band and percussion ensembles and also performs in the Faculty Jazz ensemble. He plays percussion with the Philadelphia Orchestra, OperaDelaware and the Opera Company of Philadelphia.

Henderson is on the faculty of the musical theatre department at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She also was musical director of the shows “Mother Courage” and “Threepenny Opera” for UD’s Professional Theater Training Program, along with various instrumental performances on Broadway.

Henderson and Price also are members of the Superior Ragtime Orchestra, which performs music by such composers as Jelly Roll Morton and W.C. Handy. The orchestra will join them in the program with performers on bass, trumpet, trombone and clarinet.
