Opponents of Iraq invasion plan peace walk Oct. 25 on Main Street

10:05 a.m., Oct. 24, 2002--A “Peace Walk” is planned for 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25, on Main Street in Newark.

The Newark Citizens for Peace and Justice, a newly formed group of concerned residents who oppose an invasion of Iraq, asks participants to bring their own signs and gather at the Newark Shopping Center before the start of the march.

The protest on Main Street is expected to take about 30 minutes, during which participants will be asked to maintain an attitude of respect and not to engage in any unlawful behavior.

“We are joining the rapidly growing anti-war movement in the United States and abroad,” walk coordinator Steve Hegedus, associate scientist in energy conversion, said. “Rather than striking preemptively and engaging in a war for oil that will have catastrophic human consequences, including increased terrorism against the United States, we call upon our government to uphold the principles of international diplomacy and the resumption of uncompromised United Nations weapons inspections.”

For more information about the Peace Walk, call Hegedus at 831-6253.
