Open house to spotlight upgraded biology lab facilities

An open house from 1-5 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 13, in 037 and 035 McKinly Laboratory will feature the major transformation that has taken place during the last three years for laboratory experiences in Introductory Biology I and II courses (BISC207/208).

These improvements have been funded in part by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the National Science Foundation.

Working versions of scientific investigations will be on display at student workstations, which will show all of the biological materials and specialized equipment needed for the investigation, along with the standard equipment always deployed. There also will be posters describing each investigation and its learning objectives.

According to Robert Hodson, associate professor of biological sciences, the open house is of special interest to:

• Department of Biological Sciences faculty interested in what is covered in the laboratory portion of the first-year course and those who are designing new upper-level laboratory courses and want to know what foundation to expect of their students;

• UD faculty and staff interested in the use of technology and networking in a laboratory course setting at the introductory level; and

• High school science teachers interested in learning about the biology laboratory experiences that their students may expect to find at the University.

For more information, contact Hodson at 831-8440 or via e-mail at [hodson@udel.edu].
