UD men’s soccer team falls to VCU in finale

1:15 p.m., Nov. 11, 2002--McColm Cephas scored once and dished out an assist to lead No. 21 Virginia Commonwealth University to a 3-0 victory over the University of Delaware in a Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer match Sunday afternoon, Nov. 10, at Delaware Mini-Stadium.

The win gives the Rams the No. 1 seed in the CAA conference championships, while Delaware falls to 2-12-4 overall and 0-7-2 in their inaugural season competing in the CAA. The game was the season finale for the Blue Hens.

Matthew Delicate opened the scoring in the 19th minute when he one-touched a pass from 15-yards out past Blue Hen goalkeeper Kyle Haynes into the lower left corner of the net. Cory Greiner made a nice touch pass to pick up the primary assist on the play, while Cephas picked up the secondary assist.

The score remained 1-0, until Cephas one-timed a cross from Kofi Acheampong into the lower right corner at 66:03.

Obie Gravely added an insurance goal in the final minute of play when he blasted a shot from 25-yards out into the upper left corner at 89:05.

Haynes made five saves in a losing effort for the Blue Hens. Saul Montero made one save to pick up his sixth shutout of the season for VCU. Steve Ankiel played the final 8:20 in net for the Rams and did not record a save.

The Rams out-shot the Blue Hens 11-1 and held a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Before the game, UD honored its three seniors, Mike Honeysett, Mike Marino and Jeff Martell.
