A production of The Vagina Monologues will be presented at 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 14, in Mitchell Hall and at 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 15, in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center.

The presentations are part of the University’s V-Day 2002 festivities, part of a global movement to end violence against women. Also scheduled are Vaginapalooza 2002, UD’s V-Day Women’s Health Fair, scheduled from noon-4 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 13, in Multipurpose Room A of the Trabant University Center.

In addition to raising awareness of violence against women, the events also will raise money for charity. In 2001, the locally based charity Child Inc. received $3,500.

Money raised from this year’s events will be donated to Emmaus House, a homeless shelter based in Newark.

The annual V-Day event began in 1998 as an outgrowth of Eve Ensler’s Obie Award-winning play, The Vagina Monologues. As Ensler performed the play in small towns and large cities around the world, she saw and heard firsthand accounts of the destructive personal, social and economic consequences of violence against women. Eventually, V-Day (Victory Over Violence Day) was founded. Its mission is to demand an end to violence against women and, it will be celebrated on Feb.14, Valentine’s Day, until its objective is achieved.

UD’s V-Day festivities are sponsored by the Harrington Theatre Arts Company, E-52 Student Theatre, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Student Union and Office of Residence Life.
